How it all began It all started back in 1994 with an empty warehouse and a desire to be the biggest and most respected supplier of windows, doors and general building materials in the Western Cape. Within months of opening, the 800m2 store was packed with wooden windows and doors of all shapes and sizes. With the support of Swartland, Windoor soon became the merchant of choice for all products that Swartland manufactured. The more established construction companies in Cape Town will remember us as Basic Building, of 1 Aubrey Road, Salt River. We discounted windows and doors to the bone, and sold the most out of any one store in the Western Cape. Around 1996 we re-branded to Window and Door Warehouse, and were fast becoming the supplier of choice - service, always having stock and quick deliveries were what we were known for. Along with the run-of-the-mill items, a strong demand for purpose/ custom made doors and windows emerged. We quickly forged ahead to service the needs of our customers and provided all made to order items, and grew, through experience, to become the first point of call for advice for many builders and architects. With the combination of supplying standard products and being able to supply top quality joinery, the recipe for success was set. This brought about the need to innovate and design products that were more cost effective and superior in design and construction - challenges that were proudly taken on and conquered! We have manufactured for projects in Dresden, Germany (over 400 custom panel doors), Nigeria (First Bank Head Office - over 200 two hour fire doors) and supplied to Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Malawi and all over South Africa and are fast becoming the point of call for sliding and stacking units. On the 1st of August 2012 we will be moving into our new premises in Northgate Estate. Here you will be able to view and experience nearly every type of window and door type on the market, from wood to aluminium, uPVC to composite and all items you, or your pets (they need doors too), can walk through or see through. The widest range under any one roof in Africa... Windoor firsts The first company to manufacture and keep in stock the Victorian Happy Door, thus introducing this product as a standard item which is now supplied by every door manufacturer in South Africa. The first company to manufacture and stock the Open Pane Happy Door, now the most requested panelled patio door today and manufactured as standard by all major manufacturers. The first company to manufacture a Mock Sash Window with a friction hinge, allowing for more user friendly operation, and far more ventilation. We used the Swartland Box mock sash as an example, re-designed it and made it more cost effective. Our design was adopted by all manufacturers and is considered the blueprint for every Mock Sash Window on the market today (that uses a friction hinge, of course). The first supplier to bring out a comprehensive catalogue encompassing all available stock products, from a multitude of suppliers, in one publication. The entire Swartland catalogue of windows and the Swartland, Macneil and Solid Doors catalogues of doors and door frames was also available in that publication - purely to simplify and make the process of selection more user friendly and to allow comparison of like products. The first supplier to launch a website in South Africa dedicated to windows and doors - a bit too far ahead of its time though. In 1997 there were relatively few people online in South Africa, especially in the construction industry. The project was thus shelved and re-born in 2009.
